Inspector Notes

An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted on 02/12/2024. There were 65 children, ages 14 months-5 years, 14 staff providing direct care and supervision and various support staff present during the inspection. The inspector reviewed compliance in the areas of administration, staff qualifications and trainings, staffing and supervision, physical plant, programs, emergencies and nutrition. The children were observed in the following activities: brushing teeth, free choice activities, center play, art/learning activities, and during lunch. A total of 7 children?s records, 7 staff records, and 7 medications were reviewed. The inspector arrived for the inspection at 9:00 am and departed at 12:30 pm.

Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the provider.

Based on observation and staff interviews, the center failed to ensure that children three years of age or younger may not be offered foods that are considered to be potential choking hazards.

Evidence: Sliced peaches were observed being served to the children in the STEP 6 and STEP 7 classrooms for lunch during the 02/12/2024 inspection. Staff 3 verified that there was a total of 12 three-year-old children in the STEP 6 class present when the lunch was served. Staff 8 verified that there was a total of 2 three-year-old children present in the STEP 7 class when the lunch was served.
Plan of Correction: Effective immediately only diced peaches will be served to all classrooms that receive food from the kitchens at STEP.
