Inspector Notes

A mandated renewal inspection was conducted on April 2, 2024 from 10:30am-12:00pm. There were 184 children in care with 45 staff supervising. Children were observed playing outside, eating lunch, playing freely and preparing for lunch. Lunch served today was chicken fried rice and fruit. The inspector reviewed compliance in the areas of administration, physical plant, staffing and supervision, programming, medication, special care and emergencies and nutrition. A total of 10 child records and 10 staff records were reviewed.

Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the program.

Standard 8VAC20-780-280-B
Based on observation, hazardous substances were not kept in a locked place.

Evidence: In the moonfish classroom, a hand sanitizer was kept in an unlocked cabinet.
Plan of Correction: Reminded the teachers that they ust lock
the diaper cabinet after every use.
Standard 8VAC20-780-500-A
Based on observation, teachers did not wash hands after diaper changing.

Evidence: In the Seahorse classroom, a teacher did not wash hands after changing a child's diaper.
Plan of Correction: I spoke to the teacher and reminded her to immediately wash her hands after every diaper change as soon as she removes her gloves.

Based on observation, the center did not ensure a nonabsorbent surface for diapering or changing was used.

Evidence: In the rainbow fish classroom, there was a tear in the diaper changing pad causing it to no longer be nonabsorbent.
Plan of Correction: Purchased new changing pad and
also purchased additional in order to
ensure there are extras on site when
needed.

Based on observation, a key used for locked medication was accessible to children.

Evidence: In the dolphin, seahorse, octopus, starfish classrooms, the key for the locked medication cabinet was on a hook accessible to children.
Plan of Correction: All Keys were removed and
on a hook that is not in reach
of the children.

Based on observation, diaper cream ointment used by children did not meet all the requirements.

Evidence: In the moonfish and angelfish classroom, there were 2 diaper creams that were not labeled with the child's name.
Plan of Correction: Reminded teachers to check all new diaper
creams to ensure they are correctly laeled.
