Materials and equipment available shall be age and stage appropriate for children.

Four children in the Toddler Room were observed participating in a fine-motor skill activity where they used a small spoon to transfer various small-shaped manipulatives into a container. Child A (Age 2 years) who was participating in the activity was observed placing a pearl-sized bead into their mouth with a small spoon. The Licensing Inspector alerted staff A who was supervising the activity of the occurrence. Staff A intervened by removing the bead from the child's mouth and removed the activity from access to the children. There were a total of 12 children in the Toddler Room ranging in ages of 23 months - 3 years old being supervised by 3 staff.
Plan of Correction: In the Montessori environment, materials are placed on the shelves only when children show developmental readiness. Each material is introduced through individual lessons, and staff closely monitor its use. Montessori principles also support the use of smaller objects as children enter fine-motor ?sensitive periods,? which help build coordination and concentration.
As part of our correction plan, we have reviewed all materials currently accessible to ensure they are age- and stage-appropriate for this group of children. Staff have been reminded of the progression of materials?from larger items at the start of the year to smaller, more detailed materials as skills develop?and will continue ongoing observation to maintain compliance with state regulations.
