Inspector Notes

A monitoring inspection was conducted on 8/18/2023. There were 26 children directly supervised by 5 staff members. Children were observed arriving to the program, taking walks outside, whipped cream games and music and movement. The physical plant, 3 child records, 3 staff records, evacuation drills, and emergency supplies were inspected. No medications this date. Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the program. Standard 8VAC20-780-340-F
Based on observation, children under 10 years of age were not always within sight and sound supervision of staff.
Evidence: Staff left the school age room at 10:26 am to let 2 children into the center, leaving 8 school age children, the youngest being 5 years old, alone in the classroom for about 1 minute. The same staff left the school age room again at 10:30 am to let 1 child into the center, leaving 8 school age children, the youngest being 5 years old, alone in the classroom for about 1 minute. The front door where the children were arriving was about 8 steps away from the school age room.
Plan of Correction: A staff will be promoted to assistant director who will be available to answer the door and parent questions in the director's absence. Another staff will be hired to float between classrooms.

Based on a review of emergency drills, the center has not implemented monthly practice evacuation drills.
Evidence: The center has not implemented the July 2023 fire evacuation drill.
Plan of Correction: Monthly fire drills will be conducted and documented on the form.
