Inspector Notes

An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted on 05/12/2022. There were 7 children, ages 2 years- 4 years, totaling 14 points and 2 caregivers present during the inspection. The inspector reviewed compliance in the areas of administration, personnel, environment and equipment, preventing the spread of disease, emergencies and nutrition. A total of 5 children?s records, 2 caregiver records, 1 pet record and 1 medication were reviewed. The children were observed during learning time, in free choice activities and preparing for breakfast. The inspector discussed outside maintenance, medication, children?s allergies and substitute provider requirements with the provider. The inspector arrived for the inspection at 8:40 am and departed at 10:20 am.

Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the provider.

Based on observation and discussion, the provider failed to ensure that medication shall be kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children.

Evidence: There was an epi-pen stored in the first aid kit located on the top of a tall filing cabinet. The first aid kit was not locked to prevent access by children.
Plan of Correction: Will lock the medication.
Standard 8VAC20-800-790
Based on observation and discussion, the provider failed to ensure that required telephone numbers shall be posted in a visible area close to the telephone.

Evidence: The telephone number for the responsible person for emergency backup care was not posted in a visible area close to the telephone.
Plan of Correction: Will post today.
Standard 8VAC20-800-830-A
Based on document review and discussion, the provider failed to ensure that the emergency evacuation procedures shall be practiced monthly with all caregivers and children in care during all shifts that children are in care.

Evidence: Emergency evacuation drills were not practiced in March 2022 or April 2022.
Plan of Correction: Will do one today and every month.
