Inspector Notes

An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted July 26, 2022, to determine the center's compliance with licensing standards. The inspection began at 10:50 AM and concluded at 1:04 PM. The census for today's inspection consisted of 28 children in care and 3 staff supervising. During the tour, the inspector observed the children participating in a money management activity, marketing activity, and crafts. The inspector observed 2 classrooms, inside activity area, outside activity area, kitchen, and restrooms. Staff was observed interacting with children in a positive manner. The center's first aid kit and non-medical emergency supplies were inspected and found complete. No medication is administered at this time. The required postings and liability insurance were inspected and found to be in compliance. There were five children's records, five records, and four board member?s records reviewed. There were violations cited during this inspection.

Based on records reviewed, an a search of the child abuse and neglect registry or equivalent registry from any state in which the individual has resided in the preceding five years. Evidence: Staff # 4 lived resided outside of Virginia in the past 5 years. A search of the child abuse and neglect registry or equivalent has not been initiated in the previous state.

Based on record review and interview, the licensee failed to complete background checks for an employee 30 days of employment. Evidence: Search of central registry was not available for review in staff # 5?s file. 2. The director could not provide an accurate date as to when the search request was submitted to Central Registry.

Based on record review and interview, the center failed to ensure new staff completed orientation training on all the required topics prior to the staff working alone with children and within seven days of the date of employment. Evidence: Three (3) of five (5) staff records did not document the date of completion for the Virginia Department of Education-sponsored orientation course.

Based on observation and staff interview, the center did not ensure medication, except for those prescriptions designated otherwise by written physician's orders, including refrigerated medication and staff's personal medication, and shall be kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children. Evidence: Child #5 has an Epipen that is kept with the child throughout the day.
