Inspector Notes

Today an unannounced Monitoring Inspection took place between the hours of 10:15am and 12:45pm. There were 7 classrooms observed with a total of 55 children with 10 staff within the supervision guidelines. The children were observed playing outside, transition into the building from the playgrounds, coloring, playing with blocks and eating lunch (brown rice with chicken and mixed vegetables, pineapples and milk). A complete inspection of the physical plant, children and staff records, medication and emergency procedures were observed during this inspection. Violations were found during today?s inspection and can be viewed on the Violation Notice.

Based on observation, each restroom provided for children did not contain all required supplies.
Evidence: The children's bathroom in the Discovery Preschool classroom did not contain toilet paper.
Plan of Correction: Corrected during the inspection.
Standard 8VAC20-780-510-L
Based on observation, medication was not kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children.
Evidence: Child #4's emergency medication was stored in a backpack in the child's classroom. The medication was inside of a safety bag, however the lock on the bag was missing.

Standard 8VAC20-780-60-A-8
Based on interview, the center has not obtained a written care plan for each child with a diagnosed food allergy, to include instructions from a physician regarding the food to which the child is allergic and the steps to be taken in the event of a suspected or confirmed allergic reaction.
Evidence: Child #3's physical exam documents a diagnosed food allergy. The program director confirmed that they have not obtained an allergy care plan for the child.
Plan of Correction: I will call the family today to request the form to be completed.
